Save Your Sole!

McNett's Freesole (sold as GearAid Freesole) is a urethane product you can use to save your boots, and shoes. As intended, it will reapply entire soles or flapping edges and even rebuild chunks of sole, but can do much more. Using the same basic material that most shoe soles are made of, Freesole enables you to create protective toe tips and rands, as I did in my most recent gear modification project. I also used Freesole to glue the leather uppers of my dress shoes that were starting to split. The resulting covering creates a waterproof, albeit non-breathable, coating that will protect your footwear from surface abrasions. For $8, its a no-brainer investment that can add years to your footwear. Thanks to Kristin Hostetter, Backpacker Magazine Gear Guru, for this hot tip!
