Boot Lacing Technique

As a general rule of thumb I advise to loosen upper laces on ascents and tighten on descents. It is much better for both support and blood flow. However, this is just the tip of the boot, so to speak. Use of square or surgical knots in strategic locations can relieve problem areas and afford a customized fit. Using loops or skipping grommets can also optimize a fit. Bottom line-- don't limit yourself to the traditional x-form lacing technique. Experiment with your own techniques to find optimal comfort and support. View some technique elements at Backpacker's Gear Tips: http://www.backpacker.com/gear/5245
